Attendance

At BWPS, prioritising and promoting regular attendance is a shared responsibility which allows us to foster and create a culture where every student is valued, supported and empowered to engage fully in their learning journey. We implement high quality consistent systems and practices that are compliant with the NSW Department of Education Attendance Policy. We work collectively to tighten our attendance measures at BWPS and ensure that barriers to attendance are addressed effectively, allowing students to access the full spectrum of educational opportunities available to them.

Whole school attendance at BWPS, is modelled on a tiered framework of support and intervention and tailored to our school community , creating a positive environment for engagement and learning. We have a range of strategies in place to encourage good attendance for all students in the school including the random attendance spinning wheel and prize for the class with the best weekly attendance.

We provide early intervention for targeted students who need more support to avoid chronic absences. We also utilise online attendance data trackers. For those individual students with chronic absences and who face the greatest challenges in getting to school, we offer intensive support in the form of individualised attendance reward charts and incentives.

We effectively use data systems that provide transparency around individual student attendance and inform actions to deliver effective improvement. This information is shared with the school leadership team and the classroom teacher. Interventions to improve attendance are implemented. Through professional learning, we ensure staff are familiar with the NSW DoE Attendance policy and the many attendance measures we continue to implement.

Effective communication with all key stakeholders, is used as a powerful tool to establish expectations and build productive partnerships that enhance student achievement. At BWPS we utilise proactive communication, procedural communication and positive affirmation to acknowledge students and communicate with parents.

Research highlights a clear correlation between student attendance and the achievement of quality academic, socio-economic and health outcomes. This research tells us that students with an attendance rate below 90% are educationally at risk. By instilling a sense of responsibility and accountability for attendance, Bankstown West PS nurtures a culture of punctuality and commitment that lays the foundation for lifelong learning and success.

Regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children. We aim for each student to attend school at least 90% of the time.
