English

The study of English is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

In English, students study language in its various textual forms, encompassing spoken, written and visual texts, which develop in complexity, to understand how meaning is shaped, conveyed, interpreted, and reflected.

Developing proficiency in English enables students to take their place as confident communicators; critical and imaginative thinkers; lifelong learners; and informed, active participants in Australian society. Their understanding of English through knowledge and skills acquisition is essential to their intellectual, social and emotional development.

Students develop foundational literacy skills in the early years and progressively build on these skills. This enables them to learn about and control language in a range of increasingly sophisticated contexts.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to understand and use language effectively. Students learn to appreciate, reflect on and enjoy language, and make meaning in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive, critical and powerful.
